BOKO HARAM: A war caught in ambiguity – Alkasim Abdulkadir

Alkasim Abdulkadir an experienced international freelance journalist blogs about his first encounter with the Boko Haram spokesman Abul Qaqa;

I remember when news filtered in that Nigeria’s former President –Olusegun Obasanjo had visited the family of Yusuf Mohammed, Boko Haram’s ideological leader killed under extrajudicial circumstances by the State. Obasanjo was not the President his successor Umaru Yaradua was. As the piece of news settled in I wonder what was going through the minds of the upper echelon of the group. During the telephone interview I had with the spokesperson of the group Abul Qaqa for CNN I had asked him if the group was willing to negotiate. He had remarked that even the Prophet had laid down guidelines before negotiating with his adversaries; in their case he said only the Federal Government’s unconditional release of all their members held captive can guarantee a step to the process of negotiations.

The twelve minutes interview was the most courageous act I had ever done in my entire life, as I asked shakily –choosing my words carefully I tried to reconcile the carnage I had seen at the UN building bomb site. I struggled to reconcile the voice on the phone sounding almost serenely and courteous as he gave me the details of Mohammed Abul Bara  the 27 years old man from Yobe who had driven the Honda Accord car loaded with explosives. The detail shocked me to no end. Aside the shock it also meant outside the group this was the first time they were revealing the identity of the UN House bombing to any one! It was  I scribbled fast and hard –my hand trembling. I asked some more questions forgetting others that had formed in my mind. When I asked what was the rationale of their acts he quoted in Arabic Surah Tauba Verse 14 which states: Fight them; Allah will pinish them by your hands and bring them to disgrace, and assist you against them and heal the hearts of a believing people.

This is the rallying point of all the attacks they had carried out all year long. It is the thinking and motivation of Mohammed Manga as he attempted to ram his car into the police headquarters that resulted in his death and the injuries of several policemen. It is sadly also the motivation of several hundreds of members of Boko Haram. In the words of Abul Qaqa, they are mere mortals being used by God to fight the injustice and inequality in the land; an injustice in which the UN known for its global oppression was partnering with the Nigerian government.  Before he dropped the phone he had a word for journalists and radio stations –they most stick to facts of the matter. They should get in touch with them to verify issues before going to the Press. Boko Haram didn’t want to be on a collision course with media he added. I closed my note pad and breathed in and out. The phone call sounded surreal as the images of the UN House flashed again before me. After cross-checking editorial ethics CNN released the news and the global media retold the narrative. The Security agencies released the pictures of two people that had been arrested and a man hunt for a called Mamman Nur ensued.

A typical scenario to the pointer of a city under siege is Fridays at the Abuja Central Mosque, if one was ever in doubt of the clear and present danger the scene painted here brings it closer home. That of semi-automatic gun wielding SS operative asking motorists not to park beside the mosque aided by a member of the Anti-Terrorist Squad  (ATS) checking those with bags while operatives others sit at alert in a van with the lettering ‘Anti-bomb squad’.

It’s a simple fact that ours is a case of a reactive intelligence, when those the security agents are up against are always ahead of the curve and are left to always play catch up. Our intelligence needs to move to more covert style operation, not the obvious I-am-an-S-S-guy type that we have around. This coupled with a proactive community intelligence gathering technique can change the tide of things. This should not only be applicable to militancy or terrorism alone but it should be applicable to the unsolved assassinations and even armed robberies that have bedevilled the country.

Our total lack of preparedness to tackle disasters came to fore in the wake of the UN bombing, the underbelly of our emergency response was exposed to highlight our ineffectual state.  This is despite the fact we don’t suffer from raging bush fires, tsunami, hurricanes, mudslides, volcanic eruption and earth quakes. The mere meaning of the word ‘emergency’ points to the fact that it is unexpected, but it is as if the denotation is lost on our security agencies and health care system. One of the biggest problems is not that we don’t know what to do, but how to do it. I remember begging and shouting at two policemen to allow some Red Cross officials enter the UN premises after they had begged on end. Another instance was when an Army General accosted a Civil Defence man walking with Sniffer dogs and barked at him ‘who authorized him to bring the dogs to the scene’.   The entire FCT health system which is a model to the rest of the country wasn’t prepared for an emergency of this magnitude. It didn’t expect 8 intensive care patients and more the 70 people with various degrees of injuries from the blasts as such the blood bank soon started calling for donations to augment their supply. As residents heeded the call to donate blood this in turn angered the crowd of sympathisers that had already gathered at the National Hospital.

At the UN House blast site near the epicentre rescue operation was in full uncoordinated swing with members of the FRSC disagreeing with the fire service and the  Anti-Terrorist Squad watching in disbelief, the Army and Police all trying to do  their to secure the perimeter of the building. The bottom line remained that their efforts weren’t coordinated as a team on rescue and evacuation. There were too many weak links. I remember a NEMA top official complaining that people were tampering with the evidence; I had to tell him as the NEMA official in charge of the operation he should ask them to leave and come behind the accident tape barrier. However, it was a lot of courage for the men who did the rescue and evacuation, ferrying so many injured and dead people, gathering mangled flesh in body bags required more than a requisite training but also deep humanity.

The hospitals on the other hand were and still ill equipped and under staffed by an ill motivated work force. The latter coupled with an inept and sluggish bureaucracy is the distressing quartet that is Nigeria’s red tape to a viable health sector.

The sad aspect of the aforementioned is how doctors in Nigeria get paid pittance and end up working twice as hard as they should. It is this scenario that makes doctors join the brain drain wagon to practice in other climes where their trade is highly appreciated and well remunerated.   This singular absence of inspiration is the reason for the impersonal and near loathsome nature of nurses, midwives and other paramedics towards patients.

Information management during emergencies is one area that needs tightening NEMA and the security agencies should set up a Joint Communication and Data Centre that will be authorised to give out reliable information to news agencies, relatives and the general public. Not until FCT PRO Jimoh Moshood rallied the journalists present for an on the spot briefing by Police Commissioner Micheal Zoukomor -the first official statement almost 4 hours after the explosion; before then we had gathered the bits of evidence and at some point journalists had more information than the officials. Even though Channels, AIT, ITV and even NTA were on ground and had started covering the blast.  The Nigerian Television Authority, Africa’s largest TV network located about 20 minutes from the blast site was showing the Osogbo Festival while I had already gone live on CNN. I received a call from Kristoffer Rønneberg of Aftenposten, a Norwegian Newspaper. They called after seeing my tweet on the death of a Norwegian lady later identified as Ingrid Midtgaard. They calls kept coming from BBC Wales, BBC TV, CNN Wires and later at about 8 pm I was a guest on the BBC Have Your Say Program. The last interview came at 10 PM on France 24. It is inexcusable that we wait for others to tell our people the narratives of our tragedy. The days of NTA’s editorial guidelines asking it to be pro-government should have ended in 1999.

I have always advocated for dialogue in this on going war in which we are not ready for. Military action as exemplified by similar examples in other parts of the world has the tenacity to breed more foot soldiers. Each deadlier than the last; pacifism is also a strategy.

The army of unskilled, uneducated, unemployable disenchanted young men growing in Nigeria –especially in Northern Nigeria must be giving hope beyond measure. The only war we can fight against future insurrection and the only fruitful engagement we can with future armies that may rise in this nation is to deliver continuously on the mandate of good governance and accountability. We must pray hard in order to get it right. Afterwards we must get it right.

But Where is Happyboy?

Olusegun-Adeniyi-Back-Page.jpg - Olusegun-Adeniyi-Back-Page.jpg

The Verdict according to Olusegun Adeniyi. Email, olusegun.adeniyi@thisdaylive.com.

The moment Yemi Akinsuyi saw me inside the premises of THISDAY Abuja office that looked more like a scene out of Iraq, she said, “oga, we cannot find Happyboy. He was inside the premises when the bomb exploded and now he is not picking his calls.”

Happyboy Ohije is one of those circulation boys you find in newspaper houses. They are called inserters since they help to collate the papers when it is being printed but they also run all manner of errands for people in the newsroom. With minimal education, Happyboy is very dutiful and everyone knew I was fond of him. He had come to me one day that he had a challenge concerning his education, a rather moving story but I liked the confidence with which he approached me and the manner in which he presented his problem. After offering him some little assistance, we became close, especially since he told everyone about my intervention.

Last Thursday, it was quite natural that I would be very worried about the fate of Happyboy. It turned out that he was sleeping when the bomb exploded and he eventually emerged from the rubble in a pool of his blood. But his was not the only miracle. Nurudeen, the security man seated at the exact spot where the suicide bomber exploded the vehicle is injured but alive. Incidentally, we did not know at the time and I recall one security man asking me: “Nurudeen’s wife has been calling me repeatedly and I cannot pick. What do I tell her?” His colleague by the gate, Christopher Sadiq was, however, not so lucky. Neither were some of the mechanics who had set shop behind THISDAY premises. They died along with a passer-by as the vehicle exploded.

The whole drama started for me at about 11.08 when I got a call from an hysterical Ms Avershima Ahenjir, an advert executive, saying, “they have just bombed our office.” According to what I was told when I reached the office, a vehicle came in to deliver tiles that was meant for some work at about 11am. While they were still trying to offload the tiles, the suicide bombers drove into the premises and the rest, as they say, is now history. But as everyone pointed out to me last Thursday, I would have been caught by the bombing but for the fact that I was preparing for my trip to Ibadan for the burial of my mother-in-law later that day.

I have watched on YouTube the video clip released by Boko Haram on how THISDAY was bombed, especially the moment when the vehicle entered our premises and exploded. Incidentally, the clip displayed my photograph along with my statement following the incident. I have also read their declaration of war on the media but I fail to understand why. The charge is that we have taken sides with the Nigerian state. But do we have any choice in this matter?

In an unusual backpage editorial last Sunday, the Trust newspaper put the issue in perspective: “A violent campaign to target and kill security agents, to overthrow the Constitution of the Federal Republic and ultimately to dismember Nigeria cannot be supported by the Nigerian news media, which derives a lot of its legitimacy, protection and privileges from the same Constitution. As for Nigeria itself, there cannot be a ‘Nigerian media’ if there is no Nigeria”.

That exactly is the position to which all journalists subscribe but many of us are becoming increasingly worried for our country. It is therefore incumbent on all men of goodwill who can intervene to end this cycle of violence to do so now in the interest of our corporate existence as a nation. As for THISDAY, in my 13 years here, we have seen some dark days and have come out stronger from all the tragedies. I remember our midnight plane crash right in the middle of Maiduguri desert in 2001 when the Board of Editors decided on a “Meet the Nation” tour; the fire incident that consumed our corporate headquarters in Apapa and the death of Mr. Godwin Agbroko. In each of these events, we were shattered and broken. But we never gave up the ideal for which we stand.

Where do we stand? When Bayero University Kano was attacked last Sunday, our thoughts and sympathy were with the victims of the attack and when Jalingo was attacked the next day, we took sides with the people. On the killing field that Maiduguri has become, we are one with the innocent people of that ancient city who are now besieged. We have made that very clear. But we have also been professional in our reportage while advocating dialogue with Boko Haram, believing that any and every aggrieved Nigerian deserves a hearing. What we oppose is violence and bloodletting of innocent people for no just cause. Even at this most difficult period, we remain persuaded that common sense will still prevail in the interest of our nation and its good people

Deola Sagoe’s estranged husband set to remarry

BENEATH her happy-go-lucky façade, talented fashion designer, Deola Sagoe, is not exactly a happy woman at the moment.

Her former husband, Kofi is allegedly in a new romance with a new woman simply identified as Nike. And those who should know informed SC that marriage might be on the cards for the Ghanian-born young man. Since their marriage crashed three years ago, Deola has not been linked with any man, perhaps hoping that she would resolve her differences with her estranged  beau. Insiders, however, aver that their love affair is not likely to be rekindled. Kofi Sagoe has moved on with his life and is currently enjoying a new romance.

So bitter was the ex-couple’s separation that Kofi was brusquely booted out as Managing Director of Toyota Nigeria Limited owned by his father-in-law, Chief Ade Ojo. Kofi later moved out of their matrimonial home and filed for divorce. Few months later, he became the Country Managing Director of SUBARU Nigeria where Yinka Fisher is chairman.

#Nigeria CAN to Fed Govt: stop Boko Haram now

•Oritsejafor ... yesterday •Oritsejafor … yesterday

By Gbenga Omokhunu, Abuja

Under fire from Islamist group Boko Haram’s insurgency, Christians yesterday vowed to withdraw their co-operation with the government, if the activities of the deadly sect are not checked.

Intimidation, killings, bombings and wanton destruction by Boko Haram must stop, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) declared in what its President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, described as “final call” to the Federal Government.

The latest attack on churches was at the Bayero University old campus in Kano on Sunday.

Worshippers were bombed and shot at by men believed to be members of Boko Haram. One Professor – Andrew Leo Ogbonyomi – and 15 others died in the attacks. The sect also on Monday infiltrated the convoy of Taraba State Police Commissioner Mr Mamman Sule. Eleven people died in that attack.

On Tuesday, Boko Haram released a video on Youtube, threatening media houses with attacks.

Oritsejafor spoke in Abuja after a three-hour meeting of officials of the association to review the security situation in the country. He said: “The church leadership has hitherto put great restraint on the restive and aggrieved millions of Nigerians but can no longer guarantee such co-operation, if this trend is not halted immediately.”

Pastor Oritsejafor said it had become irrelevant whether the root cause of Boko Haram insurgency is political, religious, ethnic or ideological, adding: “The question we have always asked is this; of the 51 years of existence of Nigeria as a nation, who have governed this country most? Most of them are from a particular section of the North. What did they do with the opportunities they had? What did they do with the resources they had? We need to ask questions. The people themselves need to ask questions.

“The Almajiris, if they could read and write and understand what is happening, need to ask questions. The realities are these: we know that the bottom of all this is a radical religious ideology. We want that settled but as it is right now, it has gone beyond trying to address why this happened or where it is coming from. It has gone beyond whether it is political or about poverty. The truth is that this situation must stop.

“I will now make a final call, a final call; I repeat. I will now make a final call to the Nigerian government to use all resources available to it to clearly define and neutralise the problem as other nations have done.

“It is the ideas that people coin from the Koran and are being used to terrorise the world. Now we cannot deny that these are Muslims. That is not to say that there are no good Muslims; there are. But the truth must be told. When we keep running from the truth, we will never solve the problem.

“You will recall that at our last news conference on March 6, we told the nation that the bombings and killings of innocent Nigerians may be termed senseless, but that it is not without sense for those sponsoring the act. We also said the killings and bombings were being done according to their plans in order to instil fears with the subsequent aim of eradicating religious freedom, democratic liberties with the church and Christians as the primary target.

“We have persistently pleaded with government to take courage and act to stop the surge of terror,” Pastor Oritsejafor said.

Boko Haram has become Nigeria’s biggest headache of the moment

Boko Haram has named popular newspapers and broadcast media as its new target

The extremist group, Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihadl, popularly called Boko Haram, today named more media houses and staff as targets of its attack (find full transcript of video below).

In an 18-minute video, the group threatened to attack more media houses, naming Voice of America (Hausa), Radio France (Hausa), Daily Trust, Guardian Newspapers, among others.

In part, the video contained footages of the THISDAY blast site apparently downloaded from the websites of CHANNELS TV and PREMIUM TIMES.

The group also gave reasons why it bombed Thisday office in Abuja and other media houses last Thursday.

“This is a message from jamaatu ahlis sunnah lil daawati wal jihad, and we wish to inform Nigerians our reasons for attacking some media houses,” the group said.

The video also shows that the radical group carried a live coverage of the bombing in Abuja and filmed the explosion at Thisday.

The group created the new Youtube video under the name Alhaji Mani.

Video has a background music in Hausa language, saying,” Nigerians, our name is not Boko Haram, we are Muslims, Ahlis sunnah”. The lyrics also said, “We attacked Thisday because we will never forget or forgive anyone who abused our prophet.”

First written message says the video is from ‘Public awareness department which presents; ‘Reasons for attacking Thisday Newspaper’

The Video also shows coverage of the suicide attack at Thisday office in Abuja.

It also shows a man wielding a rifle and reciting some prayer verses. Shots of the late leader of the sect Muhammad Yusuf, delivering a sermon, and in other clips, preaching, was shown.

“This is a message from the public awareness department of the Jamatu Ahlis sunnah lil daawati wal jihad, a group engaged in jihad in Nigeria.

“We wish to explain about the attack we carried out on Thisday Newspapers. Some of the reasons why we decided to attack some Media Houses, especially Thisday, is because the paper was used in dishonouring our prophet, Mohammad (SAW) during a beauty pageant in Kaduna in November 2002.

“At that time, some people who called themselves leaders of Muslims came out to say they have forgiven those who committed the offence.

“But based on our knowledge, we know that no one has the power to forgive anyone for an offence that God himself has given judgement, especially on an offence that has to do with dishonouring Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

“No one has the power to forgive this type of offence, and the judgement is for such persons to be killed.

“This lady that committed this crime, the judgement on her is to be killed at any opportunity; and the media house is also supposed to be driven out of existence whenever there is a chance to do so.

“We are just getting the opportunity to attack the media house, and we are hoping to continue these attacks until we drive them out of existence.

“It is our hope that Allah (SWT) will help his religion.

“We know that any genuine Muslim must have been deeply touched by the Thisday incident.
“Thisday newspaper is also leading in helping the government in fighting us, alongside other media houses that we will mention soon.

“Some of the offences of Thisday and other media outlets include: firstly, during the botched attempt to rescue some kidnapped foreign nationals in Sokoto; these media houses asked us if we have anything to do with the kidnap and we said we have nothing to do with it, yet these media houses reported that we were responsible for the incident, that was a lie against us.

“Secondly, when we sent a video of our leader, Abubakar Shekau, the media houses reported things that our leader did not say, such as that in response to the president’s threat to finish us in three months, we have also threatened to finish the government in three months. But the truth is, nowhere in the video did our leader said what they attributed to him.

“Thirdly, on the purported arrest of Abu Qaqa by the SSS, we have come out to tell them that the person arrested was not Abu Qaqa, yet the media continue to potray us as liars, and even said that our leader had ordered for Abu Qaqa II to be executed, and we are now searching for Abu Qaqa III.

“Recently too, they came out with another lie that one Mohammed Awwal Kontagora was the Abu Qaqa II that was executed, and that even his parents confirmed it, that was just a big lie to convince the world.

“The media also said that we have killed the father of Abu Darda, so as to pass a message to him, because he had leaked our secrets after his arrest by security agencies, and they  wanted him to know that he is one of our targets.

“These are all lies, and they are many.

“These media houses have committed a lot of offences that is detrimental to Islam, and we don’t have the power to forgive them. We will take revenge on them by God’s grace, some of these media houses have been categorized into three groups.

“The first group is the likes of Thisday whose offences are big.

“The second group we will also attack soon are Punch, Daily Sun, Vanguard, Guardian, Nation, Tribune, and National Accord, which are all newspaper houses.

“There is also VOA Hausa radio. All these media houses we will attack them including their staff and offices, by God’s grace.

“VOA Hausa for instance have recently started campaigning for people to support the government against us by exposing us,

“The next group that are on the verge of joining this list who if they are not careful we will attack very soon include, Leadership, Daily Trust, Peoples Daily and RFI(Radio France international)

“There is an online medium known as Saharareporters who have their office in New York, and who have made their site as a platform for attack against Islam. So we are warning them to stop making their site an avenue for attacking Islam, otherwise we will find a way of attacking them too.

“We resorted to using this medium to send our message instead of the normal tele-conference because of the fear by journalists; which made them refuse to conduct the conference.

“We are grateful to God for the success recorded on the attack on Thisday, and we hope to continue such attacks.

“Finally, the government has now resorted to arresting our wives and children and also demolishing our houses, like they did in Biu recently, that is why we have also resolved to start attacking government schools, especially, tertiary ones.

“We promise to demolish 500 buildings for any one of our houses that the government destroys.

“We have already started with Gombe and Kano.”

Quit If You Can’t Lead, CAN Tells Jonathan

Dissatisfied with federal government’s style of handling the security challenge posed by the spate of bombings and killing of innocent citizens occasioned by the insurgencies of a terrorist gang, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) yesterday pointedly told President Goodluck Jonathan to step aside if he couldn’t put a stop to the mindless killings in the country.

Specifically reacting to the attacks on Christian worshippers in Kano and Borno states, CAN said, “We are telling President Goodluck Jonathan, if he has not done anything to put an end to this madness, then, he should know that there is trouble in his hand.”

Meanwhile, Taraba State commissioner of police Mr. Maman Sule yesterday narrowly escaped death when a suicide bomber who laid ambush on the route to the commissioner’s office thrust an improvised explosive device (IED), at his convoy.

Although the commissioner escaped unhurt, many security operatives on his entourage were not spared: 11 persons lost their lives in the attack.

But speaking with journalists in Kaduna, the spokesman of the northern CAN, Elder Sunday Oibe, also accused northern traditional rulers of the mindless killings in the region.

He said: “We are telling the emirs, traditional rulers and the political chieftains in the north that they are behind these things and they must bring the perpetrators to book”

“To us, we feel that government is just playing games and politics with the church and the church is not going to take it anymore because anybody who kills is a murderer or arsonist.

“Why is the government becoming helpless to bring these people to book? Is the government telling us that a particular tribe or religion is superior to every other person in this country?

“We are feeling serious pains and disappointment at the entire system called Nigeria. It is highly condemnable in the strongest term because these are innocent students who were sent to school by their parents to acquire education.

“They went to worship their God only for some people to come and sniff lives out of them. It is highly condemnable, it is not just condemnable, but we will not sit down and fold our arms to accept this madness any more.

“This country belongs to all of us, and if truly it is one Nigeria, one indivisible country that has a government to protect lives and property, then, government must do something about it because it is the systematic approach of these murderers which tends to the fact that it is only Christians that are the major targets.

“They do it on Sundays and attack only places of worship owned by Christians. We have mosques scattered all over BUK, nobody has heard any attack on them. They said it is the issue of poverty, but they have not attacked any government infrastructure. If it is the issue of power, then, they should go and fight government. Why is it that it is Christians that they are fighting?

“The irony of this thing is that the people have carefully put a plan in place to eliminate Christians. Total annihilation of Christianity from the surface of this country – that is the target.

“And it seems that the government of this country led by Goodluck Jonathan is helplessly looking on, always telling us that security men are on top of the situation.

“We want to use this medium to tell the world that he has not stepped up to arrest and bring to book the people who carry out this heinous crime, who are behind these things. The country is on the verge of collapse, and no country has ever survived two wars.

“We had survived a civil war, but no country has survived a religious war. Let it be made known that Christians are not taught to retaliate, but Christians have been given the right to defend themselves, and we will do it with all manner of defence we know within ourselves.

“We cannot produce legitimate children, God-given children, beautiful children, sent to school, then people who have no value for life will continue to kill them.

“Christians cannot fold their arms anymore, and we are telling President Goodluck Jonathan if he has not done anything to put an end to this madness, then, he should know that there is trouble in his hand.”

Taraba Attack: I saw bombers force their way into my convoy — CP

A Red Cross information coordinator, M. Umar Waziri, who confirmed that 11 people died in the Taraba State commissioner of police convoy bomb attack, said: “We can confirm that 11 people were killed; 10 people died on the spot, while one person died at the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo.’’

Waziri also disclosed that 20 others injured by the blast were taken to various medical centres in the city.

The Taraba State commissioner of police, however, told newsmen that the police only confirmed the death of three persons, saying that he escaped death by a whisker.

Explaining the circumstances that led to the attack, he said he was on his way to the office and the bombers struck just when he entered the premises of the state Ministry of Finance which was adjacent to the Taraba police headquarters.

The police boss, who said that investigation had begun towards apprehending the bombers, added:

“The explosives actually hit the official car I was riding in and shattered the windscreen and front bumpers but I escaped unhurt.”

Police sources in Taraba told LEADERSHIP that the bomb which exploded at the premises of the Taraba Ministry of Finance, at about 8.45am when workers were resuming for work after the weekend break, destroyed parts of the building and damaged valuable items.

Police sources said the bombers had the police commissioner as their target, as the explosive was thrown directly at his convoy. One of the explosives hit the rider leading the commissioner’s convoy.

The police headquarters in Taraba is 40 metres away from the main entrance into the finance ministry with the ministry’s premises forming part of the entrance into the building leading to the police commissioner’s office.

“The police commissioner usually has to go through the ministry of finance to enter his office. He was passing by that usual route when the explosives were thrown. So the police commissioner’s convoy was clearly the target,’’ a top police source who preferred anonymity said.

An eye-witness, Mr. Francis Dominic, who also confirmed the attack on the CP, told LEADERSHIP at the scene of the incident that “the suicide bomber, riding a JINCHENG motorcycle with registration number QB 928 LAU, forced his way into the commissioner’s convoy while trying to detonate the explosive device suspected to be a bomb.

“The outrider on the CP’s convoy who noticed how the suicide bomber was trying to force himself into the convoy used his power bike to displace him but, by then, the bomber had already released the explosive with intention to damage the commissioner’s car, but unfortunately, the bomb exploded before he could get to the commissioner’s car.”

Another witness to the bomb blast, Shehu Umar, who spoke with LEADERSHIP in Hausa language, said:

“We saw him as he kicked his bike from the other side of the road when he discovered that the commissioner’s siren was blaring, but we never knew he was that kind of person. All of us that used to stay here are used to seeing the commissioner passing, so we never expected anything new; only to discover a heavy explosion with noise from where the man was heading into the commissioner’s convoy.

“The explosion of the bomb wounded the outrider of the commissioner’s convoy, leaving his left leg broken and one of his eyes badly damaged while several others on the convoy were either killed or severely injured,” he said. A staff of the ministry, Nuhu Titus, was not lucky as he came out at about the time the CP’s convoy was arriving. While he was waiting for it to pass, the blast went off and he was crushed into the nearby drainage.

Meanwhile, the inspector-general of police, Mohammed Abubakar, who had a meeting with the vice president, Namadi Sambo, at the presidential villa yesterday refuted claims that the bomb attack that killed over 10 persons and left many civil servants in the Ministry of Finance building injured was targeted at the state commissioner of police.

Fielding questions from State House correspondents after the meeting with the vice president, the IGP said, “My CP was not the target. It was placed on the road and it exploded; nothing happened to the commissioner and we have made arrests.”

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday condemned the bomb attack in Jalingo by terrorists, with an appeal to affected communities and Nigerians as a whole to report suspicious persons to security agencies.

Speaking through his special adviser on media and publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the president once again reassured Nigerians and foreigners resident in the country that his administration was taking every necessary action to end the spate of terrorist atrocities in the country.

Abati said, “Noting, however, that success in the war against terrorism will be more speedily achieved with greater support and assistance from affected communities, President Jonathan calls on all patriotic Nigerians, once again, to promptly report all suspicious persons to national security agencies.

“Against the background of the recent upsurge in terrorist attacks, the latest of which occurred in Jalingo earlier today, President Jonathan urges Nigerians and foreigners living in the country not to be discouraged or deterred from going about their regular affairs by the persistence of the mindless bombings and gun attacks.

Attack on media, BUK are ploys to destroy nigeria — Jonathan

Similarly, President Jonathan said that last Thursday’s attacks on three newspaper houses and the Sunday attack on Bayero University Kano chaplaincy by suspected terrorists were indicative of the fact that the objective of the terrorist group was to destabilise the country by destroying its sensitive institutions.

He, however, implored Nigerians “not to succumb to despair over the persistence of the terrorist attacks, but to remain assured that the federal government is doing everything possible to ensure that Nigeria overcomes the scourge of mindless terrorism”.

Dr. Abati in another statement noted: “The president urges Nigerians to remain united in their condemnation and rejection of the terrorists, who have shown even more clearly by their latest attacks on the media and the academic community, that their objective is to destabilise the nation and its vital institutions.

“The president deeply regrets this utterly heinous descent to new depths of calumny by the perpetrators of the attack on one of the nation’s citadels of academic endeavour and its members.

“The president conveys his deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of members of the Bayero University community who lost their lives in the attack.”

US, JNI, ACF decry attacks

In a related development, the United States government has stated that Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Africa were the major sources of instability and underdevelopment in the continent.

This was contained in the reports presented to the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs by Ambassador Don Yamamoto, the principal deputy assistant secretary for African affairs, on Monday.

Apart from Boko Haram that was largely indicted in the testimony made by the United States official, al-Shabaab, Al-Qaeda (AQIM) and the The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) were also said to be part of the reasons the African continent is not stable.

Also, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) National Headquarters has expressed shock over the multiple bomb blasts on some media houses in Kaduna and Abuja, and the similar attacks in Yola, Gombe State University and Bayero University, Kano.

JNI however called for restraint on the part of the government, especially on the arrest of innocent people as a way of stemming the tide of insecurity in the country.

In a press release signed by the religious group’s public relations officer (PRO), Alhaji Umar Ahmad Zaria, which was made available to LEADERSHIP in Kaduna yesterday, it noted that human life is sacred and it must be treated as such by all, stressing that “these incidents call for sober reflection of our actions and inactions as a nation”.

It said JNI commiserated with the families of the bereaved and wished their loved ones the fortitude to bear the loss. “In the same vein, we wish all those who sustained injuries from the blast quick recovery and their respective families, the patience and perseverance in managing the patients.”

The JNI, which also called on Nigerians to be security-conscious, stated: “We call on the federal government not to handle with levity the issue of security upheaval the nation is passing through. It is now apparent that there is serious disconnect between security personnel and the citizenry on leading information, hence the need to bridge the gap so that trust and confidence will be restored.”

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), meanwhile, noted that the perpetrators of violence that killed innocent citizens in Bayero University, Kano should embrace constructive dialogue as the only viable path to peaceful coexistence and national security for collective good.

The Forum which condemned the attacks on Christian worshippers said: “The attacks on innocent people in places of worship in Bayero University is worrisome because it conveys some aimlessness on the part of the perpetrators, considering that those affected are not part of causes of any perceived grievances.”

A statement signed by the ACF’s spokesman, Anthony Sani, stated: “ACF submits that time for sheathing of the sword is long overdue and that whatever may be the nature of any perceived grievances, violence resulting in mindless killing of innocent people can never be the solution.

“This is because, however long any conflict may take, it would still be resolved at peace talks.

“ACF also condoles and commiserates with all those who lost their lives and properties and prays to God to provide them with the fortitude to endure what happened and in the hope that they will replace the losses many folds.”

Stop wasting human lives for political motives, Tambuwal warns

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has asked perpetrators of bomb blast attacks in some states of the country, including that of Bayero University, Kano, and that which occurred in Taraba State to halt their activities, saying no innocent life must be wasted on the altar of political motives.

The speaker, who made the statement yesterday in a press release issued by his special adviser on media and public affairs, Mallam Imam Imam, was reacting to the twin bomb blasts that rocked Bayero University, Kano, and the Ministry of Finance building in Jalingo, Taraba State, on Sunday and Monday respectively.

The speaker equally urged the victims of the attacks and other Nigerians not to despair over the security challenges facing the nation, recalling that many countries of the world had at one time or the other faced various security challenges, but the important thing was that the collective determination of the people of such countries saw them through the dark periods.

“Nigeria is today experiencing its tough challenge. I am however confident that what we are facing will soon be a thing of the past. Our collective resolve as Nigerians who desire peace and stability will triumph over all dark forces in our country,” Tambuwal added.

While commiserating with the families of those who died or suffered injuries in the blasts, Speaker Tambuwal urged the security agencies to unmask those behind the blasts and bring them to justice.

Academics, students now endangered species — Don

A university don and professor of veterinary parasitology, Prof. Barineme Fakae, said yesterday that last weekend’s attack on a university campus which claimed about 17 lives, including those of two professors, was unnecessary.

Concluding that academics and their students were now endangered species, Prof. Fakae, who is the vice chancellor of Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), said that the university was a centre of knowledge that prepares people that will help the country. He therefore wondered why anybody or group would carry out such act of wickedness on a place that was expected to produce people of integrity and character.

“This type of incident is really unfortunate, unnecessary and uncalled for. If we now attack the centres where we are expecting people who can help the country, then himself it means our future is being threatened.

“Anybody who has respect for the future would not involve in this kind of act. When you attack and kill teachers, students, it is really unfortunate, I must say. And what it means for the university environment is that academics and students are engendered species,” the vice chancellor said.
