Police kill four highway robbers in Ogun

“Police  in Ogun State  on Tuesday said  they killed   four robbery  suspects and recovered  three pistols  after foiling their attempt to rob  travellers on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday.

Police spokesman for the state, Mr.  Muyiwa Adejobi,  said   in Abeokuta  that the incident took place at about 9am at Fidiwo junction along the expressway.

Adejobi said, “An 18-seater Hummer bus with  number plate Abuja BRA 445 GWA  travelling with 18 passengers  from the North  to Ibadan on getting to Fidiwo was attacked by three of the passengers.

“One of them brought out a locally made pistol and hijacked the vehicle and  diverted it into the bush where other members of the gang were waiting for them.

“An individual on the expressway,  who saw the bus being  driven into the bush,  alerted the Divisonal Police Officer of Ishara Division about the attack.”

Adejobi added that the DPO, Haruna Bashir, led his men into the bush where they saw the suspects robbing the passengers.

He said the suspects  fled  on sighting the policemen, adding that four of the hoodlums who engaged the police in a gunfire died  on the way to the hospital for treatment while the others escaped with bullet wounds.

Adejobi assured the public that police would always provide adequate security for them.

Meanwhile,  a policeman was reportedly shot and two rifles stolen in a failed bank robbery attempt in Port Harcourt, River State on Tuesday.

It was learnt that the suspects stormed an old generation bank in the city at about 2am and headed for the strongroom.

However, one of the policemen on guard was said to have fired intermittently at the hoodlums, preventing them from reaching the strongroom.”

“Lagos State Police Command Tuesday said it had arrested some armed robbery suspects and cable thieves within Victoria Island, Surulere and Satellite Police Stations, recovering arms, ammunition and stolen cables respectively.
In Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, came a report that a policeman escaped death by the whiskers Tuesday, when armed robbers stormed an old generation bank in Eligbolo, Obio/Akpor local government area of the state, seizing two rifles from policemen.
But confirming the arrest, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, a superintendent of police (SP), said at about 4p.m, a team of policemen attached to Victoria Island Police Station intercepted an armed robbery operation in their jurisdiction.
He said the robbers had attempted to rob a man of his vehicle close to the 1004 Housing Estate before the police chanced on them.
While other members of the gang fled upon sighting the police, one Gbenga Otenaike, a resident of No.20, Thomas Adeniji Adele road, was however arrested  with a toy pistol found on him.
Also, another armed robbery suspect who was identified as Uche Obi was arrested and arms recovered from him by police operatives from the Satellite Police Station.
The spokesman said the suspect were arrested by operatives who were on a stop and search duty at Maza-Maza motor park along the Mile 2 Badagry Expressway. During the search, three locally made barrel pistols with three live cartridges were found and recovered from him.
In a related development, five persons were also arrested at Alaka Bus Stop by operatives attached to the Surulere Police Station in connection with NITEL cable vandalisation.
The suspects, one Gafaru Gbadege, Morufu Ogunyinka, Aminu Taofeek, Kazeem Lawal and Kazeem Soweta, were said to be conveying the stolen cables in a commercial Volkswagen bus when they were caught.
Jaiyeoba said the three cases had been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, for further investigation before prosecution by the appropriate authorities.
Meanwhile, the policeman was shot on the leg while the robbers dispossessed security operatives on duty of their rifles during the operation.
Witnesses said the hoodlums forcefully entered the premises of the bank at about 2am yesterday in an attempt access the bank’s vault.
The state Commissioner of Police Commissioner, Mr. Mohammed Indabawa, confirmed the incident, but said the robbers did not succeed in the operation.
Speaking later during an interactive session with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Indabawa explained that one of the policemen on duty at the bank was able to prevent the armed robbers from gaining access to the bank vaults.
“There was an attempt by a group of armed robbers to rob the bank at about 2pm on Monday, but they (hoodlums) did not succeed in getting to the vaults, but they took away two of our arms and we are investigating the matter.
In another development, one person was confirmed dead and another injured in a fatal accident along the Oshodi-Apapa Expre-ssway, involving a heavy duty vehicle (truck) and a motorcycle.
According to the report, the truck’s yet-to-be identified driver with registration number XL 990 EPE had hit the motorcyclist, one Eric Njoku with a pillion and he died on his way to the hospital.”

‘Robbers Used Rocket Launcher in Delta Attack’

“An intimidating dimension may have been introduced to armed robbery in the country as more facts emerged Yuesday on Monday’s robbery attack in Delta North Senatorial District where two banks were robbed in Ibusa.
Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ikechukwu  Aduba, said Tuesday that the robbers used unconventional weapons, including rocket launchers.
Aduba, who briefed the press in Asaba, the state capital, while parading the suspects, said the robbers took the police unawares with the use of rocket launchers, rocket-propelled grenade and  assault rifles to carry out their activities in the state.
According to Aduba, “a crack team  of the detectives from Ogwashi-uku divisional  police headquarters trailed a band of robbers/kidnappers to their hide-out in Igbodo, in Ika North-East local government area of the state,  where a gun duel ensured between the robbers numbering over 30.”
He said the robbers made a detour to Ibusa where they raided two banks, adding that the police successfully re-enforced and mobilised its personnel to counter the robbers, saying they were able to demobilise  them  and gun down  four of the robbers, arrested three while others escaped with bullet wounds.
He expressed regrets that his command lost eight persons during the gun duel, said the police was able to contain the rampaging robbers with the use of Armourd Personal Carrier (APC).
According to Aduba, “the casualities include DPO Abraka, SP Steven Chigbufue and three of his men who were on their way to  Asaba and one officer from Ibusa division. Other casualties include one military officer attached to Joint Patrol and a female traveller. On the whole six policemen were killed bringing the casualty level to eight.”
He further stated that  four of the suspects were gunned dawn and those who were arrested were helping the police with useful information, adding that items recovered from the robbers include a rocket launcher, a rocket-propelled grenade, five AK47 rifles, one 9mm Zastave pistol and 11 rounds of live ammunition.
Other items recovered are: 300, 500 and 50 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, N2,071,150 cash, one  Toyota Hummer bus with registration number  No YB 58 MUS Lagos,  two HP CPUs, one network PVR, one green  Lincon Navigator, Toyota Hiace bus with registration number XC412 AGB and charms.”

Somali piracy: EU forces in first mainland raid

“EU naval forces have conducted their first raid on pirate bases on the Somali mainland, saying they have destroyed several boats.

The EU forces were transported by helicopter to the bases near the port of Haradhere, a well known pirate lair.

Anti-piracy forces have been reluctant to attack mainland bases, fearing for the crew of captured ships.

Somalia-based pirates have seized vessels across the Indian Ocean and demand huge ransoms for their release.

They are believed to be holding about 17 ships and 300 crew.

The latest incident involves the Greek-owned oil tanker Smyrni which was hijacked in the Arabian Sea last week.

The Liberian-flagged tanker carrying 135,000 tonnes of oil is reported to be heading for Somalia.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner says the attack on the land base is a significant development in the fight against Somali piracy.

The overnight raid on Somali pirate bases is small but significant. This is the first time since the EU set up its naval patrol force off Somalia in Dec 2008 that it has taken the fight to the pirates’ home base.

The idea, says the EU, is to disrupt the pirates’ business model and upset their logistics.

Naval officers say there were no casualties on either side but if raids like this are repeated – as they probably will be – the pirates are likely to adapt their operations making it harder for their equipment to be destroyed without also hitting local Somalis.

The EU recently agreed to expand Operation Atalanta to allow forces to attack land targets as well as those at sea, and this is the first time its forces have used the new rules to attack a base on the mainland.

The attack was carried out overnight and, according to the European forces, no Somalis were hurt during the action.

The multinational forces used helicopters in conjunction with two warships to leave five of the pirates’ fast attack craft “inoperable”.

The European naval mission issued a statement saying: “The focused, precise and proportionate action was conducted from the air and all forces returned safely to EU warships on completion”.

A spokesman added that the operation was carried out with the full support of the Somali government after extensive surveillance, and the aim was to deny the pirates a safe haven onshore.

Bile Hussein, a pirate commander, told the Reuters news agency that speed boats, fuel depots and an arms store had been targeted.

“They destroyed our equipment to ashes. It was a key supplies centre for us,” Mr Hussein said.

“The fuel contributed to the flames and destruction. Nothing was spared.”

Military vessels from Nato countries, the US, China, Russia, Japan and India are also involved in patrolling an area of ocean which is about the same size as western Europe.

Two decades of war in Somalia have left the country without a fully-functioning government making it hard to deal with piracy.

The transitional government controls the capital Mogadishu, but al-Shabab militants hold many southern and central areas of the country.”

Kathmandu, Nepal (CNN) — A small plane crashed after it was unable to land in a mountainous area of Nepal on Monday, killing 15 of the 21 people on board, aviation officials said.

The plane was about a mile from the airport at Jomsom, a popular tourist town in central Nepal, when it went down, said Purusottam Shakya, deputy director of air traffic service operations in Kathmandu. It was operated by Agni Air, a Nepalese carrier.

Six of the 21 people on board somehow survived the impact. They include an air hostess, two Danish passengers and three Indian passengers, said Bindesh Lal Karna, an official for the Rescue Coordination Committee at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

Of the Indian survivors, two are children aged 6 and 9, while the other is a man who is now in intensive care, according to Karna.

The thirteen other Indian passengers on the plane and the two other crew members were killed.

The survivors were airlifted to the town of Pokhara, about 200 kilometers (124 miles) west of Kathmandu.

According to Karna, the crash occurred after a technical problem prevented the plane from landing normally after a flight from Pokhara.

Karna said the pilot decided to turn the plane around and head back to Pokhara, but as he did so, the plane dropped out of the air.

Jomsom is the gateway to Muktinath Temple, a pilgrimage site for Hindus from Nepal and India. The temple is about six hours’ walk from the airport, in the Annapurna range of mountains, a part of the Himalayas popular among hiking enthusiasts.

The crash is the second disaster to hit the Annapurna region in less than two weeks.

On May 5, a flash flood swept away houses near a river that flows down from the mountain range. Thirty-one bodies have been recovered from the flooding, while 40 people are still missing, according to the local police.

UGANDAN troops have captured a senior member of notorious rebel leader Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army.

Caesar Acellam, considered the LRA’s fourth-highest ranking member, was arrested by Ugandan forces in Central African Republic and was flown yesterday to the South Sudanese headquarters of the regional armies hunting the LRA.

“My coming out will have a big impact for the people still in the bush to come out and end this war soon,” Mr Acellam told reporters who were taken to the Central African Republic to see the rebel in custody.

The Ugandan army is leading a US-backed African Union force tasked with capturing the LRA’s leaders, several of whom are wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Mr Acellam, aged 49, a tall man walking with a limp from an old wound, was flown to the base in the South Sudanese town of Nzara, at the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, for medical check-ups.

Mr Acellam was captured on Saturday and made available a day later at a Uganda army camp to confirm his arrest following a brief firefight near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“The general of the division, Caesar Acellam, who has fought in the jungle since 1984, is from now on in the hands of the Ugandan Army,” Mr Acellam told reporters, referring to himself in the third person.

The LRA’s top three commanders are Okot Odhiambo, Dominic Ongwen and Mr Kony. All are at large and wanted by the International Criminal Court along with another man, Vincent Otti, who is however thought to be dead.

“He’s a big fish,” Ugandan army spokesman Felix Kulayigye said of Acellam, who was captured along with a Ugandan woman, a Central African teenager and a baby. None of them was hurt in the arrest.

“The fact that Caesar Acellam is prisoner is a major step for us towards ending the rebellion,” Mr Kulayigye said.

Ugandan army units had reportedly waited in ambush for three weeks for the rebel after they tracked his group of around 30 fighters, army sources said.

However, Mr Acellam split from his men a few days ago, for reasons that were not immediately clear. He surrendered after the army fired a few shots.

Mr Kony started his rebellion in northern Uganda more than two decades ago, but has since been chased to the jungles of neighbouring central African states.

The LRA has since been wreaking havoc in the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mr Kony’s global notoriety soared over the past year through internet video campaign “Kony 2012” which has been watched tens of millions of times since it was posted online by the US advocacy group Invisible Children.

The video was criticised by some who said it oversimplified the root causes of the LRA’s devastating insurgency.

Mr Kony is wanted by the ICC for rape, mutilation and murder of civilians, as well as forcibly recruiting children to serve as soldiers and sex slaves.

A multi-national force, led by Uganda and helped by 100 US Special Forces, has been chasing Mr Kony in Uganda, Central African Republic, South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Joseph Balikudembe, commander in chief of the Uganda operation, recently said the combination of US military aid, the weakening of the LRA and Kampala’s efforts in hunting them would lead to their elimination.

The ICC’s chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo said on May 10 that Mr Kony would be captured or killed this year, although he did not specify why he felt the elusive rebel leader would finally be found.

A day later, a top UN envoy said hunters were closing in on the African guerrilla leader who may now be in Darfur.

Syrian clashes ‘kill 23 soldiers’ in city of Rastan

“At least 30 people – including 23 soldiers – have died in heavy overnight clashes in the central Syrian city of Rastan, according to activists.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said dozens of others were wounded in the city, in the restive Homs province.

Three troop carriers were destroyed in fighting, the UK-based group said.

If confirmed, the attack would be one of the deadliest suffered by security forces in the 14-month-long uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

It comes after government forces launched a fresh assault on Rastan at the weekend, despite a UN-backed nominal ceasefire that was supposed to come into effect just over a month ago.

Meanwhile, the EU has imposed another round of sanctions on Syria – the 15th so far – in an effort to increase pressure on the government.

‘Hama raid’

The Observatory said Rastan, which lies 180km (120 miles) north of Damascus, was subjected to sustained shelling overnight, leaving dozens of people injured.

The city, currently an opposition stronghold, has been fiercely contested during the Syrian uprising and control of the town has changed several times.

Meanwhile, the army has raided a Sunni village north of Hama, killing five people, the Observatory said.

Activists said at least 30 people died on Sunday – mainly civilians – as violence surged at flashpoints across the country despite an increase of UN observers.

The figures cannot be verified independently, as journalists’ movements are severely restricted in Syria.

The UN on Sunday said it had 189 observers in Syria, some two-thirds of the total intended for deployment as part of a six-point peace plan mediated by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

1. Syrian-led political process to address the aspirations and concerns of the Syrian people

2. UN-supervised cessation of armed violence in all its forms by all parties to protect civilians

3. All parties to ensure provision of humanitarian assistance to all areas affected by the fighting, and implement a daily two-hour humanitarian pause

4. Authorities to intensify the pace and scale of release of arbitrarily detained persons

5. Authorities to ensure freedom of movement throughout the country for journalists

6. Authorities to respect freedom of association and the right to demonstrate peacefully

The BBC’s Jonathan Head in neighbouring Turkey says neither the Syrian military nor the opposition appears to have any confidence that the plan will hold, with both using the putative ceasefire to gain ground before full-scale fighting resumes.

The EU gave no official details of its newly agreed sanctions, but an EU diplomat said the 27-member bloc had agreed to an assets freeze and visa ban on two companies and three people who are believed to be financially backing the government.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the ceasefire was “not being fully implemented”.

“There continues to be killing, torture, abuse in Syria. So it’s very important we keep the pressure on the Assad regime.”

The UN estimates at least 9,000 people have died since pro-democracy protests began in March 2011.

On Saturday, a radical Islamist group said it carried out a massive bomb attack in Damascus last week, increasing fears that extremists are taking advantage of the unrest.

The violence also once again ignited tensions in neighbouring Lebanon, where clashes in the northern city of Tripoli over the weekend left three dead, according to local media.”

FG Deploys New Bomb Detectors at Airports

“Reacting to the increased security threat in the country, the Federal Government has deployed more bomb detectors and search mirrors at the nation’s airports.

THISDAY learnt on Wednesday that the bomb detectors have been deployed at every access road to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos (MMIA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has embarked on massive training of aviation security officials to meet with the current spate of security threats in the country.

A top security official in the agency told THISDAY that FAAN is also creating awareness among air travelers and other users of the airports so that they report any suspicious moves as security operatives have also intensified their vigilance of the airports environment.

“Awareness has doubled. In the past if we see a bag we overlook it but now the situation has changed. Besides the incident of last night when anti bomb squad diffused a suspected bag at E, arrival of the Lagos airport, even this morning (Wednesday)somebody kept his bag at the terminal and left for the car park because he did not want to pay for the trolley, but before he came back the bag was impounded.

The police and other security operatives know that people’s lives may be in danger so they have to be extra vigilant,” the official said.

The bomb detector was one of the planned security equipment that would be deployed at the airports as the senior security official said that the every effort was being made to ensure that the security at the nation’s airports was not caught napping by terrorists.

“We have intensified training of security personnel and we have acquired new equipment and more are still to come. We have deployed bomb detectors, we have got some but we need 20 more to cover all the airports in the country. We have already deployed the bomb detectors at the airports in Kano, Abuja and Lagos.”

The official said that one of the major challenges at the Lagos airport was the many access roads to the terminal, saying that the airport needs many of the bomb detectors and what is good about the detectors was the fact that it is mobile and could be moved about, depending on the situation on ground.

Also FAAN is building speed breakers near the terminals to ensure that vehicles maintain a controlled speed while approaching the facilities.

The bomb detectors are operated by those trained to handle them along with well-armed policemen and suspicious vehicles are forced to stop in their stride by blocking them from getting near the terminal.

Many of the new equipment the official said would start arriving from next week as every effort would be made to ensure that all necessary high tech equipment is provided to secure the airports in the country.”

About seven people were feared killed in their sleep in an attack in the early hours of yesterday by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Rinyam Tahoss village of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The killing however came on the heels of a fresh bomb scare which occurred simultaneously in different parts of Lagos State jolted residents, prompting the state Police Command to beef up security in the affected areas.

It was also gathered that 10 others, who reportedly sustained serious injuries, were currently in critical condition at the Vom Christian hospital.

THISDAY learnt that the herdsmen, who laid ambush at various strategic parts of the village fired gun shots into the air to scare the villagers, and subsequently began to attack them in their sleep.

An eye witness said after two hours of uninterrupted operation, the assailants bolted away before the arrival of men of the Special Task Force (STF).

Confirming the incident, member representing Riyom constituency in the state House of Assembly, Hon. Daniel Dem, said: “The attack has become a daily occurrence today alone seven  people were shot death and several others are receiving treatment of gunshot and machete cuts at the Vom Christian hospital. I want to appeal to my people to remain calm and not to take the laws into their hands as appropriate measures are being taken to bring to an end the senseless killings.”

The lawmaker lamented that despite the fact that the local government was under state of emergency, people are being killed on a daily basis and called on the security personnel deploy to the area to be proactive.

In a related development, THISDAY gathered that the bomb scare occurred at Dominion Store and the E-centre housing Ozone Cinema, both in Sabo, Yaba, area of the state.

Whilst police operatives and men of the state Anti-Bomb Squad stormed the area for a search, the residents of the area took to their heels out of fear. Residents of the state have been forced to cope with the incessant bomb scares that erupts in different parts of the state.

While the search was going on in Yaba, some policemen numbering about 15 had stormed the office of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, to tighten security.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the state police command, Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, said mischief-makers were the ones sending threat messages in the state. He urged members of the public not to panic as measures have been put in place for their safety.

The presence of the policemen had disrupted the Google New Media Certification Workshop, which took place at the massive hall of NAN media centre.

FG ready to dialogue with Boko Haram – Sambo

“The Federal Government has reiterated its call on the militant Boko Haram sect and other aggrieved groups to ceasefire and come forward for dialogue.

The Vice President, Arc. Namadi Sambo, said this on Thursday in Abuja at the National Symposium, organized by Nasirul-Lahi-Faith Society of Nigeria (NASFAT), tagged “Islam and Peaceful Co-Existence in a Contemporary Multi Religious Society.

Sambo, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the occasion, said: “government is ready to discuss. History has proven that even wars that are fought for decades, at the end, are only concluded by dialogue.”

According to a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Umar Sani, the vice-president lamented the activities of some negative forces whose activities have portrayed Islam in a negative and evil light.

He said: “Islam is a religion of peace; it is a way of life. It cannot promote senseless killings and wanton destruction of property. I am not aware of any religion in the world that encourages unprovoked and relentless attack on other people.”

He reiterated the determination of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to provide adequate security for the lives and property of all Nigerians and visitors.

Sambo commended the organizers of the symposium, noting its aptness, adding that it would help to educate the public on the Islamic view of peaceful co-existence and the concept of Jihad.

He used the opportunity to enumerate the strides the administration had made in achieving the objectives of the Transformation Agenda, which cut across improved electricity supply; education; agriculture, transportation system; and poverty alleviation.

The vice president stated that to deliver on government’s promise on the revitalization of the Railway system, government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with General Electric for the delivery of 200 locomotive heads and also for the location of a locomotive manufacturing plant in Nigeria, which would also serve the West African sub-region.

Similarly, he assured that the activities of militant groups would not jeopardize government’s desire to propel Foreign Direct Investment (FDIs).

In his remarks the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, called on the Muslim Ummah to champion the principle of peaceful co-existence and education.”
