Robbers incapacitate the police in Ondo and raid three banks

Armed robbers besieged the sleepy town of Ikare-Akoko in Ondo State on Monday night and used dynamites to blow open the security gates of three banks.

According to the Police Public Relations officer in the state, Adeniran Aremu, who confirmed the incident, the affected banks are the Ecobank Plc, Wema Bank Plc and the First Bank Plc.

Fear gripped the residents who scampered out to establish what had gone amiss as the robbers followed each dynamite explosion with sporadic gun fires.

In the melee, five persons were killed by stray bullets but the Police authorities in the state confirmed the death of only two persons.
Those who died were a pastor, two commercial motorcyclists, a security guard and a teenager simply identified as Oniwu.
Investigations showed that the robbers on their arrival in the town went straight to the police station and dislodged the security personnel by shooting sporadically at them.

The station was immediately deserted as the policemen on duty took to their heels following their inability to confront the superior fire power of the rampaging robbers.

NAN further learnt that the officers fled to request for reinforcement at both Owo, also in Ondo State and at Akure, a distance of about 50 kilometers and 100 kilometers from Ikare, respectively.

The robbers had moved to the premises of the affected banks before the arrival of more security personnel and they blew-off the security gates.

It was gathered that they carried out the operations simultaneously at the three banks while the Armoured Personnel Carrier stationed at Ikare to control robbery attacks was badly damaged and de-mobilised.

The driver of the APC, and a policeman, who were hit by bullets were said to be on danger list at a hospital along with several others who sustained injuries as a result of the sporadic shootings.

NAN further learnt that a group of armed robbers had earlier on Monday evening laid siege on Akure/Owo highway and dispossessed travelers of their valuables.

They were said to have been dislodged by policemen who engaged them in a gun battle during which two of the robbers were killed.

The PPRO explained that those who died came out of their homes when they heard the sounds of the guns and were killed by the stray bullets of the robbers who shot sporadically into the air.

The police spokesman said that more policemen had been deployed to the town while the police had started efforts to track down the fleeing robbers.

“The DPO of Ikare, Aliyu Lukman, made a distress call to the headquarters and reinforcement was sent to Ikare immediately.

“The timely intervention of the police did not allow the robbers to gain access into the banks’ vaults.

“Our men also on Monday evening, killed one armed robber and arrested another four who blocked the Owo-Akure Road to raid travelers and dispossess them of their valuables,” Mr. Aremu said.

Boko Haram has become Nigeria’s biggest headache of the moment

Boko Haram has named popular newspapers and broadcast media as its new target

The extremist group, Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihadl, popularly called Boko Haram, today named more media houses and staff as targets of its attack (find full transcript of video below).

In an 18-minute video, the group threatened to attack more media houses, naming Voice of America (Hausa), Radio France (Hausa), Daily Trust, Guardian Newspapers, among others.

In part, the video contained footages of the THISDAY blast site apparently downloaded from the websites of CHANNELS TV and PREMIUM TIMES.

The group also gave reasons why it bombed Thisday office in Abuja and other media houses last Thursday.

“This is a message from jamaatu ahlis sunnah lil daawati wal jihad, and we wish to inform Nigerians our reasons for attacking some media houses,” the group said.

The video also shows that the radical group carried a live coverage of the bombing in Abuja and filmed the explosion at Thisday.

The group created the new Youtube video under the name Alhaji Mani.

Video has a background music in Hausa language, saying,” Nigerians, our name is not Boko Haram, we are Muslims, Ahlis sunnah”. The lyrics also said, “We attacked Thisday because we will never forget or forgive anyone who abused our prophet.”

First written message says the video is from ‘Public awareness department which presents; ‘Reasons for attacking Thisday Newspaper’

The Video also shows coverage of the suicide attack at Thisday office in Abuja.

It also shows a man wielding a rifle and reciting some prayer verses. Shots of the late leader of the sect Muhammad Yusuf, delivering a sermon, and in other clips, preaching, was shown.

“This is a message from the public awareness department of the Jamatu Ahlis sunnah lil daawati wal jihad, a group engaged in jihad in Nigeria.

“We wish to explain about the attack we carried out on Thisday Newspapers. Some of the reasons why we decided to attack some Media Houses, especially Thisday, is because the paper was used in dishonouring our prophet, Mohammad (SAW) during a beauty pageant in Kaduna in November 2002.

“At that time, some people who called themselves leaders of Muslims came out to say they have forgiven those who committed the offence.

“But based on our knowledge, we know that no one has the power to forgive anyone for an offence that God himself has given judgement, especially on an offence that has to do with dishonouring Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

“No one has the power to forgive this type of offence, and the judgement is for such persons to be killed.

“This lady that committed this crime, the judgement on her is to be killed at any opportunity; and the media house is also supposed to be driven out of existence whenever there is a chance to do so.

“We are just getting the opportunity to attack the media house, and we are hoping to continue these attacks until we drive them out of existence.

“It is our hope that Allah (SWT) will help his religion.

“We know that any genuine Muslim must have been deeply touched by the Thisday incident.
“Thisday newspaper is also leading in helping the government in fighting us, alongside other media houses that we will mention soon.

“Some of the offences of Thisday and other media outlets include: firstly, during the botched attempt to rescue some kidnapped foreign nationals in Sokoto; these media houses asked us if we have anything to do with the kidnap and we said we have nothing to do with it, yet these media houses reported that we were responsible for the incident, that was a lie against us.

“Secondly, when we sent a video of our leader, Abubakar Shekau, the media houses reported things that our leader did not say, such as that in response to the president’s threat to finish us in three months, we have also threatened to finish the government in three months. But the truth is, nowhere in the video did our leader said what they attributed to him.

“Thirdly, on the purported arrest of Abu Qaqa by the SSS, we have come out to tell them that the person arrested was not Abu Qaqa, yet the media continue to potray us as liars, and even said that our leader had ordered for Abu Qaqa II to be executed, and we are now searching for Abu Qaqa III.

“Recently too, they came out with another lie that one Mohammed Awwal Kontagora was the Abu Qaqa II that was executed, and that even his parents confirmed it, that was just a big lie to convince the world.

“The media also said that we have killed the father of Abu Darda, so as to pass a message to him, because he had leaked our secrets after his arrest by security agencies, and they  wanted him to know that he is one of our targets.

“These are all lies, and they are many.

“These media houses have committed a lot of offences that is detrimental to Islam, and we don’t have the power to forgive them. We will take revenge on them by God’s grace, some of these media houses have been categorized into three groups.

“The first group is the likes of Thisday whose offences are big.

“The second group we will also attack soon are Punch, Daily Sun, Vanguard, Guardian, Nation, Tribune, and National Accord, which are all newspaper houses.

“There is also VOA Hausa radio. All these media houses we will attack them including their staff and offices, by God’s grace.

“VOA Hausa for instance have recently started campaigning for people to support the government against us by exposing us,

“The next group that are on the verge of joining this list who if they are not careful we will attack very soon include, Leadership, Daily Trust, Peoples Daily and RFI(Radio France international)

“There is an online medium known as Saharareporters who have their office in New York, and who have made their site as a platform for attack against Islam. So we are warning them to stop making their site an avenue for attacking Islam, otherwise we will find a way of attacking them too.

“We resorted to using this medium to send our message instead of the normal tele-conference because of the fear by journalists; which made them refuse to conduct the conference.

“We are grateful to God for the success recorded on the attack on Thisday, and we hope to continue such attacks.

“Finally, the government has now resorted to arresting our wives and children and also demolishing our houses, like they did in Biu recently, that is why we have also resolved to start attacking government schools, especially, tertiary ones.

“We promise to demolish 500 buildings for any one of our houses that the government destroys.

“We have already started with Gombe and Kano.”

Police grill Saraki over N9.7bn loan

Saraki

• Supporters besiege SFU, as ex-governor gets bail

Former Governor of Kwara State Bukola Saraki was yesterday a guest of the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja where he was quizzed by investigators over a N9.7 billion loan.

The loan was said to have been obtained from the defunct Intercontinental Bank by Joy Petroleum Company, a firm which the former governor is said to have substantial interest.

The senator, who is assisting the police to clear certain grey areas in the said loan which was obtained by Joy Petroleum during his tenure as Governor of Kwara State, was released on bail last night.

The Special Fraud Unit had declared him wanted last week over his failure to honour an invitation  by the SFU in respect of the loan.

Access Bank, which has taken over Intercontinental Bank, is believed to have initiated the investigation as part of the bank’s loan recovery drive.

It was like a political rally at the Police Special Fraud Unit (SFU)Milliverton Road, Ikoyi Lagos as political associates, party leaders, and supporters of Saraki  from  Kwara  came to show solidarity to the former  governor.

Saraki was supposed to appear at the SFU yesterday morning in Lagos. He later appeared in Abuja.

It was alleged that the ex-governor used three of his companies to secure the loan, which was later allegedly fraudulently written off by the  management of Intercontinental bank under Mr.  Lai Alabi.

His supporters  were led by Mr. Ishola Fulani, the Kwara State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) . They urged the police to handle the investigation with care and ensure that justice is done.

According to them, Saraki is a transparent man and can never be involved in any fraud.

The supporters, who stormed Ikoyi in over 20 buses from Ilorin,  insisted that the police must treat their political leader fairly.

Mrs. Ebun Owolabi, a member of Kwara State House of Assembly who was part of the protesters warned that police should not allow anyone to use them.

Owolabi said: “I am speaking on behalf of women in Kwara State. Nothing must happen to this man who is a man of integrity and honour. We are not saying that police should not do their job, what we are saying is that he should be treated fairly and that nothing must happen to him.”

Commissioner of Police in charge of SFU, Mr. Tunde Ogunshakin  said  his command would bring all the culprits in the alleged loan scam to book.

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ahmed, Alhaji AbdulWahab Oba, yesterday said Kwara government was not paralysed as a result of the solidarity protest held by the ex-governor’s supporters for him at SFU.

Oba said: “We want to place it on record that the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed was in Lagos on Sunday 29th of April 2012 with some top government functionaries to interact with Kwara professionals resident in Lagos.”

#Nigeria Boko Haram’s Onslaught On BUK: “It Was Like An Abattoir,” Says Survivor

By SaharaReporters, New York

A graduating student of Bayero University Kano who narrowly escaped being killed by the Boko Haram sect yesterday has narrated a horrendous story of how members of the militia, in addition to the use of explosives, took strategic positions and gunned down worshippers who tried to flee during their attacks.

The female survivor, who doesn’t want to be identified, told SaharaReporters via telephone, “We were in the mass, eventually the Reverend Father, on hearing unusual gunshots and other laity started wondering.  Immediately explosives began to explode right in the mass and in the other chapel in the hall near sports place. We started crying and running in and out. We sighted them afar holding guns and shooting indiscriminately and all worshippers [were] running.

“They were in normal kaftan clothes of several colours, I cannot say their number but they spread across the theatre in two areas.  They were shooting and the explosion continued sporadically. Other members were shouting please, please, don’t kill us, don’t kill us, but they continued. Eventually one student held me and we sneaked out to a toilet and he crossed over too.

“I remained in the toilet and was hearing shooting and wailing and I refused to come out.

It was when shooting ended, and I heard sirens, then I came out. I saw the whole grounded littered with our dead students and staff, and it was like an abattoir where animals were butchered. From there I was taken to hospital, and treated of the bruises I had on my body. This is my worst experience of life and I cannot imagine; it was like a film [but it was] real attack on us.  We heard that none of [the attackers] was arrested.”

Our Olympic eye in the sky: Inside the RAF’s airborne command centre that will guard Britain against terror threat during 2012 Games

  • RAF’s fearsome Boeing E-3D Sentry takes part in two-hour test run – codenamed Taurus Mountain – as forces gear up to combat terrorist threats
  • Aircraft and ground units hone skills during major multi-layered air defence drill
  • Show of military force as Defence Secretary declares: ‘want the world to know we will be prepared in every respect’

This is the aircraft that will be on the frontline in the mission to protect spectators and athletes from terrorism during the Olympics.

The Boeing E-3 Sentry has helped the military carry out thousands of missions in war zones across the globe, including Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.

But now, this state-of-the art aircraft, is set for a crucial role closer to home, guarding against threats during this summer’s London Games.

The £179m plane, which features an all-seeing radar housed in the distinctive dome, enables armed forces to find, target and neutralise threats from land, sea or air from hundreds of miles.

Defence chiefs have drafted the fearsome aircraft in to help orchestrate the enormous task of keeping the public safe from all form of attack.

The unpressurized dome is 30 feet in diameter, six feet thick at the center, and is held 11 feet above the fuselage by two struts. It tilts down at an agle of 6° at the front to reduce its air drag during take-offs, and while flying endurance speed. The dome uses both bleed-air and cooling doors to remove the heat generated by electronic and mechanical equipment. The hydraulically-rotated antenna system spins six times per minute above the fuselage and houses pulse-Doppler detector enabling it to pick up dozens of air and land threats from hundreds of miles

E- 3D has been extensively employed in the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) role.

The E-3D Sentry, known to the RAF as the AEW1, is based on the commercial Boeing 707-320B aircraft, which has been extensively modified and updated to accommodate modern mission systems.

Mission endurance is approximately 11 hours or more than 5,000 nautical miles without the need to refuel.

But the E-3D is the only aircraft in the RAF’s inventory capable of air-to-air refuelling by both the American ‘flying-boom’ system and the RAF’s ‘probe-and-drogue’ method.

Yesterday, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond visited the base to observe an air security training exercise and meet members of the armed forces who will be providing airborne security throughout the summer.

During the visit he stressed that security plans have been put in place for the Olympic Games to make sure the UK is ‘prepared in every respect’ to deal with any threats.

Philip Hammond said the potential of any outside threat or danger at this summer’s Games was ‘hopefully very unlikely’ but said a huge operation was ready to deal with anything that might go wrong.

He said: ‘Part of this exercise is making anyone with ill intention aware of the layered air defence that will be in place.

‘We’ve got no specific threat to the Olympics at all and certainly no specific threat of any kind of airborne threat, but we want the world to know we will be prepared in every respect so that we will be able to ensure that the London Olympics are safe and secure.’

He added: ‘Ever since 9/11 we’ve had a routine plan in place to deal with the possibility of a rogue airliner.

‘What we’re doing for the Olympics is lifting the profile of that and adding additional layers of defence to the routine air defence strategy that we have in place 365 days a year.’

Mr Hammond sat with General Sir Nick Parker and E-3D Sentry personnel in the mission crew area and viewed a scenario in which a rogue aircraft headed towards a target area and RAF Typhoons were scrambled from Coningsby in Lincolnshire, as well as a helicopter and sniper who could either ‘take out’ the pilot or the rogue aircraft’s engine.

Mr Hammond said a ‘number of ministers’ would be involved in the decision-making process if such action was needed and was confident military personnel could deal effectively with all scenarios.

Yesterday’s exercise was also to provide reassurance to ‘friends and allies’ who were sending teams to the Games, he added.

The E-3D Sentry carried out a two-hour test run of the exercise, codenamed Taurus Mountain, over Leamington, Dishforth and the east coast of the UK yesterday morning.

THE ALL-SEEING RADAR

The plane’s Northrop Grumman AN/APY-2 high-performance, multimode lookdown radar is able to separate airborne and maritime targets from ground and sea clutter.

One E-3D flying at 30,000ft can scan at distances of over 300 nautical miles.

It can detect low-flying targets or maritime surface contacts within 215 nautical miles and it can detect medium-level airborne targets at ranges in excess of 280 nautical miles.

The multi-mode radar provides lookdown surveillance to the radar horizon and an electronic vertical scan of the radar beam provides target elevation and beyond-the-horizon operation for long-range surveillance of medium and high-altitude aircraft.

These attributes allow it to determine the location, altitude, course and speed of large numbers of airborne targets.

Flight Lieutenant Craige Curry said the plane and crew acted as the ‘eyes in the sky’ for areas where low-level radars could not reach and fed data back to the ground so a full security picture could be seen.

He said: ‘We’ve been involved in supporting numerous Olympics events over the years,’ he said. ‘We call them ‘high visibility events’, which the Olympics is this year.

‘We’re reasonably well-practised in terms of this kind of operation.’

Flt Lt Curry said the crew would be looking for anything and everything in the air during the Games.

‘Anything that flies we’ll be trying to build a picture of,’ he said.

Aircraft and ground units will be part of the multi-layered air defences for the Games, including RAF Typhoon interceptors, RAF E-3D Sentry and Royal Navy Sea King surveillance aircraft.

Sniper-carrying RAF Puma and Navy Lynx helicopters, as well as RAF radar systems and air defence missile systems, will all be in place.

Once the flight had finished and landed back at RAF Waddington Mr Hammond viewed a number of military aircraft and met personnel.

Air Vice Marshal Stuart Atha said the principles that underpin air security plans for the Olympics meant extra assets were able to be brought in, and ‘rapid and appropriate’ decision making was the same as on any other day of the year.

Asked if he was confident air crews could manage and maintain security, he said: ‘That’s what today’s about – it’s about exercising.

‘It’s just like Olympic athletes are preparing for the Games – well so are we.

‘We’re preparing for the Games to bring all these different assets together so that we can be prepared to deliver a safe and secure Olympics, but also doing it from the air in a way that preserves the spirit and the culture of the Games.

‘Hopefully you won’t see us, we will be above and beyond your awareness.’

The surface-to-air missile was developed for the British Army and Royal Air Force. It is designed to be able to strike against longer-range and higher-altitude targets as well as close, low flying threat and will be deployed at strategic locations across London

The £125m twin-engine Typhoon are the RAF’s multi-role fighter meaning they can carryout air-to-ground bombing raids as well as engage other aircraft in a dog fight

The armed forces have been keen to show off their capability to counter terrorism in the build up to the Games.

Around 100 marines and 50 officers rehearsed a string of high-speed drills amid fears attackers could use the waterways to launch onslaughts on London landmarks, earlier this year.

About 50 marine police officers in rigid inflatables and fast response boats were joined by up to 100 military personnel and a Royal Navy Lynx helicopter for the exercises.

The Thames runs directly past the O2 Arena, which will be known as the North Greenwich Arena for the purpose of the Games, when it will host events including gymnastics.  The river will also be used to transport tourists between venues via water buses and a new cable car.

Typhoon jets and HMS Ocean, the largest ship in the Royal Navy’s fleet, will eventually be deployed to protect the London 2012 Games along with up to 13,500 military personnel.

London: Surface-to-air missiles on top of flats to protect Olympics as part of huge security operation .

Ground-to-air missiles are to be sited on the roof of a block of flats near the Olympic site as part of a huge security operation to protect the Games.

The Army will station soldiers and high-velocity surface-to-air missiles on the residential block in East London to ward off airborne terror threats.

Residents in the private, gated flats in Bow have received a leaflet warning them that a team of ten soldiers and police will be placed at the building – home to 700 people – for the duration of this summer’s Games.

It follows an announcement by Defence Secretary Philip Hammond in November that missiles might be used to safeguard the Olympic site.

Last night, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed the missiles would be deployed within the next few days. They describe them as ‘a useful deterrent’.

Resident Brian Whelan, a journalist, said the MoD leaflet says the missiles will be fired only as a last resort.

He said: ‘They are going to have a test run next week, putting high-velocity missiles on the roof just above our apartment. They’re stationing police and military in the tower of the building for two months.

‘It’s a private, gated community with an old watch tower which is now a lift shaft.

‘We have an MoD leaflet saying the building is the only suitable place in the area. It says there will be ten officers plus police present 24/7. I’m not sure if they are going to live in the building. We have a gym and a pool and people have seen them there so it makes you think it will be some sort of Army base – it’s not ideal.

‘The property management company which runs the place put up posters and gave out the leaflets today.

‘The general tone was, “Great news, aren’t we lucky”, but that’s not normal, it’s not something people should have put on them.

‘I’ve looked these up [the missiles] and I don’t think they’re the kind of thing you can fire over a highly populated area like Tower Hamlets, think of the debris.’

Mr Whelan said the leaflet poses a series of questions residents might ask, such as: ‘Will this make me a target for terrorists?’

The 28-year-old said: ‘But the answer on it is that we will be safer with it here.

‘From the few people I’ve spoken to, and the security we have here, they’re not happy about it. I don’t think it needs to be here at all.’

#Nigeria: BUK attacks: Two professors, 13 others shot dead

Image

Two  professors – Jerome Ayodele and Andrew Leo Ogbonyomi –  and 13 other Christian worshippers were killed in coordinated attacks at the Bayero University, Kano on Sunday. Also killed in the attacks was a senior non-accademic staff, Mr. Sylvester Adah.

The attacks took place at  the Indoor Sports Hall, where the Catholic faithful in the university had their Sunday mass, and an open air theatre where Protestants worshipped.

Our correspondent reports that other worshippers sustained various degrees of injuries. The incident came three days after members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, had bombed media houses in Abuja and Kaduna State.

Although no group had claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attacks as at press time, there were concerns that they could be the handiwork of the fundamentalist Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

Also on Sunday, Rev. Albert Naga of Church of Christ In Nigeria, LCC SIMARI, and three church elders were shot dead in Maiduguri, Borno State  by  gunmen   suspected to be Boko Haram members. The Reverend and the elders were leaving the church after the communion service  when they were killed.

The spokesman of BUK, Mustapaha Zaradeen, when contacted, said it was difficult to get the actual casualty figure of students.  But  he  confirmed the death of seven persons, including students and worshippers from outside the university.

Zaradeen, however, said that the attacks were carried out at about 8.30 am by gunmen numbering about 15, who stormed the worship places on motorbikes from over four locations within the campus.

Going by the manner of the attacks, witnesses claimed the  bandits might have laid siege to  the area before the arrival of worshipers for the  Sunday service because shootings began barely 10 minutes after the mass began.

Many of the victims were taken to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Emergency ward for treatment.

One of the victims is a 400-level accounting student of BUK, Faith Onche. She was shot in the arm. Onche said they had assembled for the  service at the open air theatre at about 8.30am. She said that minutes after the service began, gun shots were heard few metres away from the arena.

She said, “Initially, it was mistaken by some of us for a burst tyre. Until it became sporadic, it dawned on us that it was a gun attack and at that point, there was stampede as everyone scampered to safety.”

Onche said she was on a business visit to the campus but decided to worship at the worship centre.

She was emphatic that the worship centres were not bombed, insisting that she saw the gunmen who opened fire on the worshipers.

Sources at the university corroborated her story, adding that the only time explosions were heard was when the attackers were leaving the campus after the operation.

“They (gunmen) pursued them (worshippers), shooting them with guns. They also attacked another service at the sporting complex,” the witness told AFP.

A witness said there was pandemonium and that he saw two men shooting indiscriminately.

A history lecturer at the university, Mohammed Suleiman, said security guards had to run for  dear   lives when the violence broke out.

“For over 30 minutes, a series of bomb explosions and gun shots took over the old campus, around the academic blocks,” he told Reuters.

Although    officials confirmed seven deaths after the attacks, they  claimed that up to 20 people  could have been  killed as bodies were lying around and were being taken to hospitals.

“I counted at least 15 dead bodies. I think they were being taken to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital,” another  witness told Reuters.

Some eyewitnesses  said they saw fresh bloodstains at the scenes of the incident. Vehicles and motorbikes were abandoned by panic-stricken worshippers.

The Joint Task Force officials who cordoned off the scenes immediately they arrive with Armoured Personnel Carriers,  intercepted a Mercedes V boot, suspected to have been primed with explosive devices  in the area.

Kano State police spokesman, Ibrahim Idris, said  by the time police arrived, the attackers had “disappeared into the neighbourhood,” adding that a manhunt was under way.

Reacting to the incident, Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who cut short an official trip to Abuja to visit the scenes of the incident, described the attacks as  unfortunate and sad.

Kwankwaso commiserated with the university authorities and its community and lamented that “such a painful thing” had happened at a time peace was gradually returning to the state capital .

He assured that the state and Federal governments would continue to work hard to ensure that peace  prevailed among residents of the state.

The governor  noted that the state government had an arrangement with public and private hospitals  to treat victims of such incident.

The Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Yahuza Bello, conducted the governor round the scenes of the incident.

#Nigeria: BUK attacks: I jumped over a fence to escape – 71-year-old Prof

April 30, 2012 by Martin Ayankola 12 Comments
The attacked hall

Seventy-one-year-old Professor Emmanuel Olofin,   a professor of Geography at the Bayero University, Kano, was at the hall where Catholics had gathered to worship. He shares his story with Martin Ayankola.

“It was like this. We use the Indoor Sports Hall of the university for our services. Usually, we start mass at 8am but today (Sunday) we started a bit late because we were making some arrangements.

“We started at about 10 minutes after 8am. At about 8.15am we started hearing sounds of gunshots and pellets falling on the roof of the building.

“Then, the Reverend Father asked, ‘What is happening?’ After that, there was pandemonium, we all rushed out and people were trying to cross over to Kabuga, a nearby settlement. It was mostly gunshots but I think they were also throwing grenades.

“Some people jumped over the eight-foot fence, while some decided to take the pedestrian exit that leads to Kabuga. I believe that most of the people that died were those who took the pedestrian exit because  it seemed as if the attackers used the pedestrian gate to gain entrance.

“I jumped over the fence and eventually took refuge under a tree. I was in  my place of refuge, when I heard a siren wailing  at about 10 am. I think that was when the Police came.

“Right now, I have been able to confirm about six of our people dead. I know of Profs Jerome Ayodele and Leo Ogbonyomi, who died. I also know of  a senior non-academic employee of the university,Mr. Sylvester Adah, who died.

“How a 71-year-old man could have jumped over a fence? It was the grace of God!”

‘I was preaching when the attackers arrived’

Professor Julius Falola, a professor of Geography, was at the centre where Protestant worshippers were attacked. He spoke to Martin Ayankola.

“We, those of us who belong to a protestant group, Chapel of Victory,  were holding our own service at an open ground, under the tree, close to the Faculty of Medicine.

“We started the service at about 7.30am. At about 8.15am, when I had just started preaching the day’s sermon,   I  sighted a group of men advancing towards where we were.

“Initially, they did not look suspicious, but suddenly, a shot was fired directly at the congregation and  subsequently several shots followed.

“The attack was simultaneous, as they were attacking us, they were attacking the Catholic group  worshipping in the Indoor Sports Hall. I could not say the number of the attackers. One could not wait, everybody ran.

“Some jumped over the fence while others ran deeper into the campus. I also escaped to the university  clinic.

“The  shooting went on for about  45 minutes. At about  the 46th minute, I heard the wailing of the  siren,  I think the soldiers and police arrived about that time.”

“The attackers were firing gunshots and throwing hand grenades.  Some of our members sustained injuries and right now, we could not ascertain the number of  casualties.”
