Senior al Qaeda operative killed by airstrike in Yemen

Sanaa, Yemen (CNN) — A senior operative of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula wanted for his role in the USS Cole bombing was killed by an airstrike in Yemen on Sunday, Yemeni officials said.

Fahd al Quso, 37, was killed while riding in a vehicle in the Rafdh district in Shabwa province, according to the officials.

Al Qaeda members confirmed the death in text messages to local media, saying al Quso died along with a companion identified as Fahd Lakdum.

Al Quso was indicted by a federal grand jury in New York in 2003 on 50 counts of terrorism offenses for his role in the October 12, 2000, bombing of the USS Cole in Aden, Yemen. The bombing killed 17 U.S. sailors.

In addition to being one of the most-wanted terrorists in Yemen, the FBI had offered a $5 million reward for any information leading to al Quso’s capture.

He had been at large since escaping in April 2003 with eight others from a Yemeni prison, where they had been held on suspicion of involvement in the Cole bombing.

Earlier Sunday, two security officials told CNN that four Yemeni airstrikes killed six suspected al Qaeda militants and wounded two others in Lawder district of Abyan province.

The Defense Ministry said that 10 other suspected militants had been killed since Saturday morning in the same province’s Zinjibar district.

The ministry said that the strikes were targeting two locations: a militant hideout and a training site.

Nine troops were wounded in Abyan’s capital of Zinjibar when a mortar exploded, a senior Defense Ministry official told CNN. Two of the wounded were in critical condition, he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the news media.

Local security officials said that the offensive has been the fiercest since last year, when the country began its anti-terrorism efforts.

More than 240 militants have been killed over the last month in Abyan alone, the security officials said.

“Al-Qaeda has been greatly weakened over the last two months and we expect them to evacuate strategic positions over the next two weeks,” a senior official in Abyan who is not authorized to speak to the news media told CNN on condition of anonymity.

He said that 24 soldiers were killed during the same period of time.

Yemeni government military planes roam the skies of Abyan throughout the day, residents said.

“We wake up in the morning and see bodies laying on roads or near our farms. Most of the attacks take place late at night or early morning,” said Yasser al-Numairi, a resident of Abyan.

The violence comes as newly elected President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi has vowed to increase the pressure on al Qaeda until they are eradicated from every Yemeni village.

“Our fight against al Qaeda will continue until the displaced citizens can return safely to their homes and terrorist operatives surrender and lay their arms,” Hadi said Saturday night in a speech broadcast on Yemen Television.

The Interior Ministry said on Sunday that 14 suspected al-Qaeda militants were arrested in April and that it will continue hunting down terrorists nationwide.

Al Qaeda is seeking to take advantage of the political unrest in Yemen to expand into new areas of southern Yemen.

“Dieziani Allison-Madueke Called Me Over 20 Times In Quest to Become Minister For Petroleum,” Claims Henry Okah in Affidavit

Diezani Allison-Madueke
By SaharaReporters, New York

In an affidavit to be filed in a South African court, detained Mr. Henry Okah claims that in just the first few days of April 2010, after Mr. Goodluck Jonathan became Acting President of Nigeria, one Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke called him over 20 times for help to become Petroleum Minister.

In her calls, Ms. Madueke explained that she “was competing for the post of the Minister of Petroleum with the now Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr, Odein Ajumogobia,” and asked for assistance “to tip the scale in her favor.”

In the 42-page affidavit, Mr. Okah claims Mrs. Madueke specifically asked him to speak to President Jonathan and “put a good word for her,” furnishing him with up to date information on the president’s availability via calls and text messages.  Mr. Okah then spoke to President Jonathan in the early hours of April 5, 2010, he says in the affidavit, following which Mrs. Madueke later called to thank him for his contribution in influencing her appointment as Minister for Petroleum.

Okah says in the affidavit that he reluctantly accepted to speak to Ms. Madueke at the prompting of now presidential adviser, Mr. Oronto Douglas, who, he said, called him on April 4, 2010, saying that Ms. Diezani Allison-Madueke was desperate to speak to him.  Mr. Douglas underlined Mrs. Madueke’s need of Okah’s assistance in persuading President Jonathan to appoint her Minister for Petroleum.

In March of 2010, Mr. Jonathan had sent Douglas to meet Okah in South Africa, according to the affidavit.  During their meeting, which took place between March 31 and April 1, Mr. Douglas informed Okah that the Northern region of Nigeria was doing everything to prevent Jonathan from being the president.

Mr. Okah has been in a South African Prison since October 2, 2010. He is charged under the Terrorist Act’s Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Act, Act 33 of 2004. He has been denied bail by various courts in South Africa.

Okah was linked with the 2010 Independence Day bombing of the Eagle Square in Abuja.  Okah is facing charges that Chima Orlu, who allegedly supervised the operation, acted under his instructions.  Prosecutors allege that he was in communication via phone and SMS with Mr. Orlu and another co-perpetrator, Ben Jessy Ebere.

In Mr. Okah’s new affidavit, he affirms that on the day of the bombing, he received a call from Mr. Moses Jituboh, the Head of Personal Security to President Jonathan, who asked him to continue to cooperate with the President. As Mr. Okah asserted in 2010, following the bombing, Mr. Jituboh also asked him to shift the blame of the bombing to radical elements in the North.

Following the emergence of new facts, Mr. Okah is reapplying for bail. In his response to new information in his police docket that contains evidential material that will be used in his trial.  Okah is facing trial at South Gauteng High Court that is estimated to last over 18 months.

He is pleading with the court to grant him bail because the case against him is weak and the state cannot provide evidential material to support their case.

The case will begin on October 1, 2012 by which time he would have spent 2 years in jail. The State has lined up over 50 witnesses from Nigeria to appear in court in South Africa. Okah also plans to call over 100 witnesses in his defense.

A graduating student of Bayero University Kano who narrowly escaped being killed by the Boko Haram sect yesterday has narrated a horrendous story of how members of the militia, in addition to the use of explosives, took strategic positions and gunned down worshippers who tried to flee during their attacks.

The female survivor, who doesn’t want to be identified, told SaharaReporters via telephone, “We were in the mass, eventually the Reverend Father, on hearing unusual gunshots and other laity started wondering.  Immediately explosives began to explode right in the mass and in the other chapel in the hall near sports place. We started crying and running in and out. We sighted them afar holding guns and shooting indiscriminately and all worshippers [were] running.

“They were in normal kaftan clothes of several colours, I cannot say their number but they spread across the theatre in two areas.  They were shooting and the explosion continued sporadically. Other members were shouting please, please, don’t kill us, don’t kill us, but they continued. Eventually one student held me and we sneaked out to a toilet and he crossed over too.

“I remained in the toilet and was hearing shooting and wailing and I refused to come out.

It was when shooting ended, and I heard sirens, then I came out. I saw the whole grounded littered with our dead students and staff, and it was like an abattoir where animals were butchered. From there I was taken to hospital, and treated of the bruises I had on my body. This is my worst experience of life and I cannot imagine; it was like a film [but it was] real attack on us.  We heard that none of [the attackers] was arrested.”
